How to Make a Pillow Cover

I am so excited to show you the pillow cover I made for my couch!

I have been looking for an ikat print throw pillow for my couch but they were all very expensive…like $30-$70 for one little toss pillow!  No way!

Here is the one I made for $8.  I love it when I can duplicate something for so much less!

Here is what you need to make one yourself.

1/2 yard of fabric of your choice.  I bought mine at Joanne Fabrics.

A pillow- mine is an 18inch throw pillow that I already had for my couch.

Thread and a Sewing Machine.

First, lay your fabric out and make sure it will cover your pillow.  My 1/2 yard covered my 18 inch pillow perfectly!

You will need to roll each of the short ends over twice and stitch… this will be the exposed ends of your pillow “envelope”.  Making sure this is double rolled and stitched will make your pillow cover completely washable without fraying.

Make sure you do this to each of your short ends.

Wrap your fabric around your pillow to see how much of an overlap you will have, mine is about 4 inches…perfect.

Then, take your fabric and turn it right sides toward eachother and sew up each of the open sides on the right and the left.

It will look like this.

Now you can turn your pillow right side out through your envelope pocket.

Tuck your pillow inside just like you would a sham.

Toss it on your couch!

 Voila!  New throw pillow!  Hooray.

  2. You were right – this IS exactly how I make pillow covers. Hilarious that you stumbled upon my post right after doing yours. It’s the easiest way if ya ask me. Plus, you can take ‘em off and wash them when they’re covered with dog drool and dirty kid fingers. Oh wait, maybe that’s just at my house. :o )
Thanks for coming by my blog today and taking the time to comment.
Good luck with your pergola curtains. You can’t beat the price of the drop cloths!

  3. I agree…throw pillows are too expensive. I love that you made yours into a sham so that you can change it out whenever you are ready for a new look. Very clever! Thank you for your instructions…I will use this for my new throws this summer.:)
