There are so many inspirational folks out there. That is one thing I love about the blog world. You can find some amazing ideas!
I found the idea for outdoor curtains on My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia and Rindy Mae Blog. I loved the idea! Do you know how expensive outdoor curtains are?! If you don’t, check these out here , here and here. Wowsa.
I wanted some outdoor curtains to soften the outdoor patio space, but I didn’t want to drop $400 to buy them.
Luckily, after reading a couple of the other blogs that made curtains using… guess what? Drop Cloths! I concluded that it was in fact doable. ( I hate it when you see a brilliant idea and you go try to do it yourself and it is either twice the price that they mentioned or three times more difficult.)
I marched down to Home Depot and bought 4 painters drop cloths. My total for my “outdoor curtains” was just over $40! Awesome!
I stitched up a casing across what would be the top of the curtain. It was tough, because the fabric was really big and stiff. Plus it is pretty thick too. I made it through with only one broken needle by taking it slow.
My husband hung three rods, one on the right, one on the left and one across the middle. We hung them with regular steel pole that we spray painted white to match our pergola. We used closet rod holders and screwed them right into the pergola frame. Perfect and cheap!
Here is how they turned out! I am in LOOOOOVE!
I love the layer of softness it adds to our porch. I feel like it brings the indoors out a bit as well. Plus, since these are drop cloths they are pretty weather resistant and will hold up well year round!
Have you used drop cloths for anything unusual? Any other Pottery Barn outdoor knock off ideas for me? I would love to add some more posh to this space.

We have not had any problems with mildew. Although, we live in Colorado which is a pretty dry state. I wonder if they would have problems in a place that is more humid. I looooove them so much. I am contemplating leaving them up all winter.
How are the curtains working out? Do you find problems with mildew at all?
they look like a million bucks!
hope you have a moment to drop by and do check out my giveaway on the sidebar.

Oooo liz you are giving me ideas…. party backdrops??? maybe.
Drop cloths?! Leah, that is genius! They look fabulous!
The only unusual way I’ve used the cloth drop cloths has been as backdrops for a play. So, if you’re ever in charge of a play and there’s a very limited budget, these were perfect to paint on.:)
